About INTRAOPERATIVE MONITORING (IONM)
IONM offers protection of neural tissues and organs (brain, spinal
cord and peripheral nerves) during surgery. By measuring spontaneous or
elicited (evoked) electrical signals produced by the nervous system or
attached muscle groups during surgery, early irritation or
impending injury can often be detected. This offers an opportunity to
intervene and prevent permanent injury. IONM has been shown to be
effective in reducing operative neurological complications in several
types of surgery, but is best documented in spinal surgeries for
protection of the spinal cord.
Take Time to Learn
If you are unfamiliar with intraoperative monitoring, take time to
browse our patient information and physician resource areas. We strive
to make intraoperative monitoring understandable, accurate and of real
benefit to patients and their physicians. If you have questions or
comments we would love to hear them here.
